Creative In Focus - Visual Trends: Super Sensory

Imagery is about to get even more immersive: Macro detailing, close crops, HD. Vivid visions that blaze and engage all of our senses. Some of this is out of necessity, sure.

But the super-sensory trend is also about content, not just composition. The more digital we are, the more we long for the tangible. The more we’re required to sit in front of screens, the more we romanticize the experiential and the unplugged.

Previously thought to be lost, this film shows President John Kennedy giving a speech to labor leaders at a ballroom in the Americana Hotel in New York City, on November 15, 1963, just 7 days before his assassination. Kennedy addresses the fifth constitutional convention of the AFL-CIO, in what were to be his last words to labor.

In his speech the President discusses the importance of economic growth, and in particular the importance of jobs. Job growth he says, can be accomplished through a combination of tax cuts and expanded social programs. He comments on rising healthcare costs, advocating for a bill to provide health insurance for senior citizens, and speaks for expanding economic assistance to Latin America, saying ‘the United States is the keystone in the arch of freedom.’

So goes the song by Buknas de Culiacan, a narcorrido band documented in Shaul Schwarz's new film Narco Cultura. The music, and its glorification of Mexico’s violent drug cartels, has become a seeping cultural influence on both sides of the border - you may remember an opening sequence in the AMC series Breaking Bad that featured a narcorrido ballad to meth kingpin Heisenberg (via Mother Jones).

Narco Cultura opens November 22.
