His Excellency The Governor of the Falkland Islands, Mr Nigel Haywood, photographed here at Government House, East Falkland. The role of the Governor in UK Overseas Territories is multi-faceted; he is the representative of HM the Queen in the Islands, and represents the UK Government to the people and the Government of the Falklands. He also represents the interests of the Falkland Islands Government to the UK Government.
Over 30 years since the end of the Falkland Islands War, the territory is still a major point of dispute between the UK and Argentina. Argentine Prime Minister Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner recently called British control of the islands ‘a blatant exercise of 19th Century colonialism.’ This prompted UK Prime Minister David Cameron to reply that the ‘future of the Falkland Islands should be determined by the Falkland Islanders themselves.’
